The Hispanic community at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church will be celebrating the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Saturday, December 12, 2020. Celebrations will start with Mañanitas to Our Lady of Guadalupe at 7:00 AM and a Spanish mass at 12:00 Noon, officiated by Rev. Hector Cruz, SM.
“Las Mañanitas” is a traditional birthday song sung in Mexico and other Latin American countries, usually done at erly morning to awaken the birthday celebrant. It is also an annual event in Ponce, Puerto Rico, dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. This event starts with a pre-dawn parade while singing the traditional Las Mañanitas song accompanied by Mexican mariachis. A celebratory mass follows the parade.
Our Lady of Guadalupe is a Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary aftera series of apparitions to Chichimec peasant Juan Diego and his uncle Juan Bernardino in December 1531. Pope Leo XIII granted the image a canonical coronation on October 12, 1895. Today, the venerated image on a cloak is now housed at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.
