The Gospel for today’s feast is always Matthew’s account of the Beatitudes. At first they seem to favor the meek, the humble, the merciful. But then Jesus ends with some tough ones, aimed at those who are persecuted, insulted, and slandered. While it may sound negative, Jesus is actually giving us encouragement.
Jesus isn’t telling us to make enemies, but not to be afraid if we do. An important part of our faith is the imperative to spread it. Some people do that by sharing their faith during their lunch break. Others teach formation classes to prospective Christians. So there are many ways to spread the faith, and many types of saints who are celebrated today.
Maybe today would be a good day to learn about your favorite saint. What made her special? How did he spread the faith? What persecution did they suffer? Perhaps you could talk about the saints with your children. What saint shares a name with your child? As St. John says in the second reading, we are all God’s children (1 John 3:2). As we get to know our favorite saints, their lives can inspire us to face persecution or ridicule for our faith—or at least the courage to talk about our faith, and maybe change someone else’s life. Todos los Santos: Conocer a los Santos
El Evangelio de la fiesta de hoy siempre es el relato de Mateo de las Bienaventuranzas. Al principio, parecen favorecer a los mansos, los humildes y los misericordiosos. Pero luego Jesús termina con algunas bienaventuranzas duras, dirigidas a quienes son perseguidos, insultados y calumniados. Aunque pueda sonar negativo, Jesús en realidad nos anima.
Jesús no nos dice que nos hagamos enemigos, pero no tengamos miedo si lo hacemos. Una parte importante de nuestra fe es el imperativo de difundirla. Algunos lo hacen compartiendo su fe durante la hora del almuerzo. Otros imparten clases de formación a futuros cristianos. Así que hay muchas maneras de difundir la fe y muchos tipos de santos que se celebran hoy.
Quizás hoy sea un buen día para aprender sobre tu santo favorito. ¿Qué lo/la hizo especial? ¿Cómo difundió la fe? ¿Qué persecución sufrió? Quizás podrías hablar sobre los santos con tus hijos. ¿Qué santo comparte nombre con tu hijo? Como dice San Juan en la segunda lectura, todos somos hijos de Dios (1 Juan,:2). Al conocer a nuestros santos favoritos, sus vidas pueden inspirarnos a enfrentar la persecución o el menosprecio por nuestra fe, o al menos a tener la valentía de hablar de ella y tal vez cambiar la vida de alguien más.
