On October 9, Pope Leo XIV released his first official papal document. The document is an Apostolic Exhortation titled “Dilexi Te” in Latin or “I Have Loved You” in English. The document reflects on God’s love for the poor. Pope Leo tells us at the beginning of “Dilexi Te” that “as we contemplate Christ’s love, ‘we too are inspired to be more attentive to the sufferings and needs of others and confirmed in our efforts to share in his work of liberation as instruments for the spread of his love.’”
Pope Leo also tells us at the beginning of this document that Pope Francis was in the process of preparing this document before his death. Pope Leo adds, “I am happy to make this document my own — adding some reflections — and to issue it at the beginning of my own pontificate, since I share the desire of my beloved predecessor that all Christians come to appreciate the close connection between Christ’s love and his summons to care for the poor.”
I invite you to read, reflect, and pray with the document “Dilexi Te” over the next few weeks, as I do the same. You can simply google “Dilexi Te” and “Pope Leo” together and you will find the document on the Vatican website in 8 languages, two of them being English and Spanish. It is about 20 pages long. I have enjoyed reading and praying with “Dilexi Te” so far, and I look forward to sharing some reflections regarding it in the bulletin over the next few weeks.

El 9 de octubre, el Papa León XIV publicó su primer documento papal oficial. Se trata de una Exhortación Apostólica titulada “Dilexi Te” en latín o “Te he amado” en español. El documento reflexiona sobre el amor de Dios por los pobres. El Papa León nos dice al comienzo de “Dilexi Te” que “al contemplar el amor de Cristo, ‘nos sentimos inspirados a estar más atentos a los sufrimientos y necesidades de los demás y confirmados en nuestros esfuerzos por participar en su obra de liberación como instrumentos para la difusión de su amor'”.
El Papa León también nos dice al comienzo de este documento que el Papa Francisco lo estaba preparando antes de su muerte. El Papa León añade: “Me complace hacer mío este documento, añadiendo algunas reflexiones, y publicarlo al comienzo de mi pontificado, ya que comparto el deseo de mi amado predecesor de que todos los cristianos lleguen a apreciar la estrecha conexión entre el amor de Cristo y su llamado a cuidar de los pobres”.
