Jesus Calms the Sea

From today’s gospel reading:
“One day, at sunset, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Let’s go to the other shore of the lake.’ Suddenly, a strong wind broke out and the waves crashed into the boat… (Jesus) rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Quiet, be still! Then the wind ceased, and a great calm ensued.”

Reflection:
On June 6, it was commemorated another anniversary of the Allied invasion of the coasts of Normandy, in France, the famous “D-Day”.   Surely fear and doubts about the success of the enterprise overwhelmed the allies, but in the end, when they managed to establish “the beachhead” on the “other shore” (on the French coast), they realized that all the fears, sufferings and casualties, had been worth it.

Jesus invites us today, to pass to the “other shore”, with him, in the boat of Peter, which is the Church, and despite all the storms against her. Jesus asks us, just as he asked the apostles:  “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

So, we ask ourselves:
What is for us, personally, that “other shore” that Jesus invites us to pass, even if it were to be found outside our “comfort zone”?

What does it mean, for me, to leave my own shore and move to where Jesus is leading?

Will we be courageously enough, as a Church, to face all the storms that come against her, confident in the powerful presence of Christ?
