On September 1st our Parish will be celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the Marist Fathers presence at Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH). On that occasion we share with our parishioners a brief article from Fr. Ted Keating, S.M. (archivist in Washington, DC) about the Marists coming to this Parish.
“Leading up to 1986 the Marists were expanding the cross-cultural ministries in areas of Tampa, Florida, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Texas. The Marist Provincial at the time, Fr. Gene Driscoll, along with the Provincial Council planned for the Marists to move forward with this expansion.
OLPH offered a diverse parish composed of parishioners from the Puerto Rican/Mexican/Cuban and Filipino communities in the Tampa Bay area, besides the American MainStream. Through dialogue with Most Rev. W. Thomas Larkin, Bishop of St. Petersburg at that time, Fr. Driscoll accepted to minister at OLPH beginning in 1986. OLPH also offered an ideal place for our senior Marists.
Father Thomas Stokes, SM served as the first Marist pastor from 1986 until his retirement in 2012. He was succeeded by Fr. Roland Lajoie, SM, who served at OLPH until January 2017. Fr. Hector Cruz succeeded Fr. Lajoie and is the current pastor of OLPH.”
El 1 de septiembre nuestra Parroquia celebrará el 35 Aniversario de la presencia de los Padres Maristas en Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro (OLPH por sus siglas en inglés). Por esa ocasión comparto con nuestros feligreses un breve artículo del Padre Ted Keating, S.M. (archivista en Washington DC) sobre la llegada de los Maristas a OLPH.
“Antes de 1986, los maristas estaban expandiendo los ministerios interculturales en áreas de Tampa, Florida, Nueva Orleans, Louisiana y Texas. El Provincial Marista en ese momento, el P. Gene Driscoll, junto con el Consejo Provincial la planearon.
Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro ofrecía una oportunidad de servir a feligreses de cultura puertorriqueña/mexicana /cubana y filipina en el área de Tampa Bay (además de la cultura americana predominante). A través del diálogo con el Reverendísimo W. Thomas Larkin, Obispo de San Petersburgo, el P. Driscoll aceptó la parroquia. Para los maristas, este lugar era ideal para nuestros maristas mayores.
El padre Thomas Stokes, SM sirvió como primer párroco marista a partir de 1986 hasta su jubilación en 2012. Fue sucedido por el P. Roland Lajoie, SM, quien sirvió hasta enero de 2017. El P. Héctor Cruz sucedió al P. Lajoie y es el actual párroco.”
