From today’s Gospel reading
Jesus addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else. “Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector … I tell you; the latter went home justified, not the former; for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted”.
Reflection
Today, as the members of this congregation depart from our time of prayer together, each one will look ostensibly the same. The change in us, that is affected by authentic faith-driven prayer, will become obvious as the coming week – with all its joys and sorrows, smiles, and suffering, loving, and living, serving, and giving unfolds. Until we meet again next week for our communal celebration, each of us can lend to one another the support of mutual prayer and the freedom to change, so that the change that occurs in each of us might become contagious.
So, we ask ourselves
How can we become enablers of change? By withholding criticism? By giving one another the benefit of the doubt? By relegating the prerogative of judgment to God? By forgetting past mistakes? By being willing to be surprised by another’s growth in goodness?

Jesús dirigió esta parábola a aquellos que estaban convencidos de su propia justicia y despreciaban a todos los demás. “Dos hombres subieron al área del templo para orar; uno era fariseo y el otro era recaudador de impuestos … Yo les digo; este último se fue a casa justificado, no el primero; porque el que se exalta será humillado, y el que se humilla será exaltado”.
Reflexión
Hoy, a medida que los miembros de esta congregación salgan después de haber tenido aquí juntos un tiempo de oración, todos se verán ostensiblemente igual. El cambio en nosotros – producto de una auténtica oración, impulsada por la fe – se hará obvio durante esta semana que comienza, llena de alegrías y tristezas, sonrisas y sufrimiento, amor, vida y servicio. Hasta que nos volvamos a encontrar la próxima semana, para nuestra celebración comunitaria, todos nosotros tendremos oportunidad de apoyarnos mutuamente en la oración. Cada uno de nosotros puede ofrecer al otro la oportunidad y la libertad de cambiar. Ojalá que el cambio que ocurra en cada uno de nosotros pueda llegar a ser contagioso.
Entonces, nos preguntamos
¿Cómo podemos convertirnos en facilitadores del cambio? ¿Reteniendo las críticas? ¿Dándose unos a otros el beneficio de la duda? ¿Relegando la prerrogativa del juicio a Dios? ¿Olvidando los errores del pasado? ¿Estando dispuestos a ser sorprendidos por el crecimiento de otra persona en bondad?
