Sometimes a mayor presents the key to the city to a citizen who has given outstanding service to the community. When Jesus gives Simon the keys to the kingdom of heaven, it is more than just a symbolic honor bestowed by a mayor. Jesus is actually giving both a blessing and a responsibility.
The blessing is that Peter recognized Jesus as the Son of God. Even today, people are blessed with this kind of faith. An atheist who has heard of Jesus but regards him as just another holy man may receive the faith to see that Jesus is the Son of God. A sick person may see that Jesus is with her in her suffering and begin to have hope. The faith that sees Jesus in others is the rock on which Jesus builds his church.
The responsibility comes in the binding and loosing. One meaning of this is the power that Jesus gives his church to forgive sins. So those who follow Jesus have that same obligation to forgive others. If we forgive those who hurt us, they may come to see God s love in us and know that God forgives them, too. So why pass up an opportunity to show God s love by forgiving someone? All Christians pray in the Lord s Prayer that we may be forgiven as we forgive others. Let us use the keys of the kingdom to open the doors of God’s love. Tom Schmidt
Llave de la Ciudad
A veces, un alcalde entrega la llave de la ciudad a un ciudadano que haya brindado un servicio ejemplar a la comunidad. Cuando Jesús le entrega a Simón las llaves del reino de los cielos, es más que un honor simbólico otorgado por un alcalde. Jesús en realidad está dando tanto una bendición como una responsabilidad.
La bendición es que Pedro reconoció a Jesús como el Hijo de Dios. Incluso hoy en día, las personas son bendecidas con este tipo de fe. Un ateo que haya oído hablar de Jesús pero lo considera otro hombre santo puede recibir la fe para reconocer que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios. Una persona enferma puede ver que Jesús está con ella en su sufrimiento y empezar a tener esperanza. La fe que ve a Jesús en los demás es la roca sobre la cual Jesús edifica su Iglesia.
La responsabilidad viene en el atar y desatar. Un significado de esto es el poder que Jesús le da a su Iglesia para perdonar los pecados. Así que los que siguen a Jesús tienen la misma obligación de perdonar a los demás. Si perdonamos a quienes nos lastiman, es posible que lleguen a ver el amor de Dios en nosotros y sepan que Dios también los va a perdonar. Entonces, ¿por qué dejar pasar la oportunidad de mostrar el amor de Dios al perdonar a alguien? Todos los cristianos oramos en el Padrenuestro para que seamos perdonados como perdonamos a los demás.
