From Fr. Hector’s Desk – March 5, 2023
If you’re like me, who loves shrimp and fish; or if you are vegetarian and do not consume meat from bipedal or quadruped animals — comply with the Lenten rule of Friday’s abstinence is not a sacrifice at all.
In these cases, or even if abstaining from meat on Fridays of Lent is a true sacrifice, but you want to do something else, you could try to abstain from something you really like and/or follow some of these suggestions from Pope Francis:
Acts of charity
- Say hello, always and everywhere.
- Say thank you, even if you shouldn’t.
- Remind others how much you love them.
- Greet with joy those people you see every day.
- Listen to others’ stories without prejudice, with love.
- Stop to help. Be attentive to those who need you.
- Lift someone’s spirits.
- Celebrate the qualities or successes of another person.
- Select what you do not use and give it away to those who need it.
- Help when needed, so that another can take a break.
- Correct with love, do not be silent out of fear.
- Have good details with those who are close to you.
- Clean what | use at home.
- Help others overcome obstacles.
- Phone your parents if you are fortunate enough to have them.
Fasting from:
- Hurtful words, better convey kind words.
- Discontented, better fill yourself with gratitude.
- Anger, better fill yourself with meekness and patience.
- Pessimism, better fill yourself with hope and optimism.
- Worries, better fill yourself with trust in God.
- Complain, better fil yourself with simple things in life.
- Pressures, better fill yourself with prayer.
- Sorrows and bitterness, better fill your heart with joy.
- Selfishness, better fil yourself with compassion for others.
- Unforgiveness, better fill yourself with attitudes of reconciliation.
- Words, better fill yourself with silence and listen to others.
