As we begin 2025, we find ourselves in a Jubilee Year.
The practice of a Jubilee Year has ancient roots with our Jewish brothers, and the practice is described in the Book of Leviticus, Chapter 25.
For Catholics, Pope Boniface VIII instituted the first Christian Jubilee in 1300 as a year set aside to encourage the faithful to embark on pilgrimages, to repent of their sins, forgive the sins of others, and to renew a focus on the spiritual life.
Since the Jubilee declared by Pope Boniface VIII, the Church has designated each new Jubilee as a special year of grace and forgiveness, offering the faithful an opportunity to obtain a plenary indulgence. Originally occurring every 50 years, today this practice is observed every 25 years and serves as a reminder of God’s love, mercy, and continual call to conversion. The theme for the 2025 Jubilee Year is “Pilgrims of Hope.”
If you have the means and the opportunity to make it to Rome between now and January 6, 2026, go and be a Pilgrim of Hope. If, however, going to Rome is an impossibility, there are opportunities here in the Diocese of St. Petersburg that will allow us to participate in the Jubilee Year.
Bishop Parkes has designated six pilgrimage destinations here in the Diocese of St. Petersburg. There is one destination in each of the five counties of the Diocese, as well as the Cathedral of St. Jude. Here is a link for further information:

Al comenzar el año 2025, nos encontramos en un Año Jubilar.
La práctica de un Año Jubilar tiene raíces antiguas en nuestros hermanos judíos, y la práctica se describe en el Libro de Levítico, Capítulo 25.
Para los católicos, el Papa Bonifacio VIII instituyó el primer Jubileo cristiano en 1300 como un año reservado para alentar a los fieles a embarcarse en peregrinaciones, arrepentirse de sus pecados, perdonar los pecados de los demás y renovar su enfoque en la vida espiritual.
Desde el Jubileo declarado por el Papa Bonifacio VIII, la Iglesia ha designado cada nuevo Jubileo como un año especial de gracia y perdón, ofreciendo a los fieles la oportunidad de obtener una indulgencia plenaria. Originalmente ocurría cada 50 años, hoy esta práctica se observa cada 25 años y sirve como un recordatorio del amor, la misericordia y el llamado continuo de Dios a la conversión. El tema del Año Jubilar 2025 es “Peregrinos de la esperanza”.
Si tienes los medios y la oportunidad de llegar a Roma desde ahora hasta el 6 de enero de 2026, ve y sé un Peregrino de la Esperanza. Sin embargo, si ir a Roma es imposible, aquí en la Diócesis de San Petersburgo hay oportunidades que nos permitirán participar en el Año Jubilar.
