At the start of Palm Sunday Mass, we hear of people greeting Jesus with palm branches and praise. Later, we read the whole story of how Jesus died. It starts with Jesus giving us himself in the Eucharist (which we celebrate on Holy Thursday). Then we hear about Jesus’ suffering and death on the cross (Good Friday). Finally, we hear of Jesus’ body being laid in a tomb (kept in mind Holy Saturday). The final part of the story is revealed on Easter when God definitively defeats sin and death!
This is the week to pause and let all of this sink in, until it becomes personal. To listen as if we’re hearing it for the first time. To see with our imagination, all the actions, words, gestures, and happenings surrounding the death of Jesus the One who surrenders to death so to defeat it.

Al comienzo de la misa del Domingo de Ramos, escuchamos que las personas saludan a Jesús con ramas de palma y alabanzas. Más tarde, leemos toda la historia de cómo murió Jesús. Comienza con Jesús entregándose a sí mismo en la Eucaristía (que celebramos el Jueves Santo). Luego escuchamos sobre el sufrimiento y la muerte de Jesús en la cruz (Viernes Santo). Finalmente, escuchamos que el cuerpo de Jesús fue colocado en una tumba (recordemos el Sábado Santo). La parte final de la historia se revela en la Pascua, cuando Dios derrota definitivamente al pecado y a la muerte.
Esta es la semana para hacer una pausa y dejar que todo esto se hunda, hasta que se convierta en algo personal. Escuchar como si lo estuviéramos escuchando por primera vez. Ver con nuestra imaginación, todas las acciones, palabras, gestos y acontecimientos que rodean la muerte de Jesús, Aquel que se entrega a la muerte para vencerla.
