Remember these “elect” in the photo from last week? To refresh your memory, at the Rite of Election at the Cathedral of St. Jude two weeks ago, the Catechumens officially “elected” to receive their Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) and the Bishop officially recognized their decision and blessed their journey forward. I have some very exciting news. We will be praying for them in a special way during the next three Sunday Masses of Lent. Every year, in every church that has “elect” throughout the world, the church offers special prayers to strengthen them on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent. These special prayers as called the “Scrutinies”. The church even uses special Gospel readings selected specifically for the “elect” during these “Scrutiny” Sundays.
At the Sunday Masses that our “elect” attend (predominantly the 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM Masses), I will invite them forward after the homily and literally pray over them with officials prayers of the Church. The following is what the Church tells us the Scrutinies are: “The ‘Scrutinies’ are set forth to purify minds and hearts, to fortify against temptations, to convert intentions, and to awaken the will, so that the ‘elect’ may cling more closely to Christ and pursue more vigorously their desire to love God.” May we pray for our “elect” and the hundreds of thousands of “elect” all throughout the world.

¿Recuerdas a estos «elegidos» de la foto de la semana pasada? Para refrescarte la memoria, en el Rito de Elección celebrado en la Catedral de San Judas hace dos semanas, los catecúmenos fueron «elegidos» oficialmente para recibir los Sacramentos de Iniciación (Bautismo, Confirmación y Eucaristía) y el obispo reconoció oficialmente su decisión y bendijo su camino hacia adelante. Tengo una noticia muy emocionante. Rezaremos por ellos de manera especial durante las próximas tres Misas Dominicales de Cuaresma. Cada año, en todas las iglesias que tienen «elegidos» en todo el mundo, la Iglesia ofrece oraciones especiales para fortalecerlos los domingos tercero, cuarto y quinto de Cuaresma. Estas oraciones especiales se llaman «escrutinios». La Iglesia incluso utiliza lecturas especiales del Evangelio seleccionadas específicamente para los «elegidos» durante estos domingos de «escrutinio».
En las misas dominicales a las que asisten nuestros «elegidos» (principalmente las Misas de las 10:00 AM y las 12:00 PM), los invitaré a pasar al frente después de la homilía y rezaré literalmente por ellos con las oraciones oficiales de la Iglesia. A continuación se explica lo que la Iglesia nos dice que son los escrutinios: «Los «escrutinios» deben ayudar a la conversión total de los elegidos y despertar la voluntad de mantenerse estrechamente unidos a Cristo y de proseguir con mayor empeño en su esfuerzo por amar a Dios sobre todas las cosas». Oremos por nuestros «elegidos» y por los cientos de miles de «elegidos» en todo el mundo.
