A scripture scholar whom I had as a professor in seminary once asked us seminarians during class, “What is the best bible?” We responded with different bible translations and publishers, and he kept replying to all our responses with “Maybe”. Getting a bit frustrated, we finally asked him, “Is there actually a best bible?” We had suggested almost every bible in existence and he kept telling us “Maybe”. The professor then told us, “Absolutely, there is a best bible…It’s the one that you open and read.”
It is so true. Bibles are not meant to stay looking pretty. They are meant to be worn and taped together from so much use. People often ask for bible recommendations, so I would like to give you a few bible recommendations in English and Spanish. They are bibles that can help guide you in prayer and study, and they are bibles you can pray with daily for the rest of your life. Below are some great Catholic bibles with brief explanations about them:
The New American Bible, Revised Edition (NABRE) ($10 on Amazon)
This is a wonderful, simple bible that has been a staple in our Catholic Church for decades. This is the translation we use for the readings during Mass.
The Catholic Youth Bible (NABRE) ($33 on Amazon)
I used this bible from high school until just a few years ago. It is an excellent bible for the youth and beyond. There are little explanations throughout the bible specifically tailored to the youth.
The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible: Old and New Testaments (RSV2CE) ($55 on Amazon)
This bible just came out a year ago. There are brief and excellent introductions before each book in the bible and extensive, in depth footnotes that explain many passages in scripture extremely well. It has become my personal, everyday bible and will be for a very long time. Although it is expensive, I believe it is well worth the price. Please note, if you buy this bible there is a larger version and a personal size version.

Esta es una Biblia excelente. Se ha convertido en mi Biblia personal para el día a día. Incluso tiene marcadores en las páginas para ayudarte a encontrar los diferentes libros de la Biblia.
La Biblia Católica para Jovenes ($35 por Amazon)
Utilicé esta Biblia en mi proceso de aprendizaje del español. Es una Biblia excelente para los jóvenes. Contiene pequeñas explicaciones adaptadas específicamente a ellos y utiliza un lenguaje español más sencillo.
La Biblia de Jerusalén: 5ª edición ($65 por Amazon)
Esta Biblia es más extensa. Incluye introducciones y notas, así como contribuciones de estudios contemporáneos en los campos lingüístico, teológico, histórico y arqueológico. Además, está escrita en español de España, en lugar de latinoamericano.
