This weekend’s Gospel is the familiar parable of the sower and the seed. This is one of the rare times in Scripture when Jesus explains one of his parables. Jesus describes the action of the sower (God) who scatters seed (the Gospel message) in all types of soil (our hearts).
The sower’s actions can be interpreted in different ways. Some might call the sower wasteful, especially when seed falls on the path. Yet Jesus stresses this action: God desires to share His Word with everyone, even when it may not be accepted or take root. Most of us would not waste our time on something that is unlikely to succeed, but God’s ways are not our ways. God’s generosity invites us to reflect on the many times that He has poured out His grace upon us even when our hearts were not ready to receive it.
This leads us to consider the different types of soil where the seed falls: the condition of our hearts when God’s Word is shared with us. We are challenged to consider how we have been each type of soil at different times in our lives, and how we can become “rich soil.” Take comfort in knowing that when our hearts are rocky ground or tangled among thorns, God is persistent! With patience and love, He sows His Word within us, transforming us into rich soil that not only hears His Word, but understands it and bears fruit abundantly for the Kingdom.

El Evangelio de este fin de semana nos presenta la conocida parábola del sembrador y la semilla. Esta es una de las pocas ocasiones en las Escrituras en las que Jesús explica una de sus parábolas. Jesús describe la acción del sembrador (Dios), quien esparce la semilla (el mensaje del Evangelio) en todo tipo de terreno (nuestros corazones).
Las acciones del sembrador pueden interpretarse de diversas maneras. Algunos podrían considerar que el sembrador actúa de forma derrochadora, especialmente cuando la semilla cae en el camino. Sin embargo, Jesús enfatiza esta acción: Dios desea compartir su Palabra con todos, incluso cuando esta no sea aceptada o no logre echar raíces. La mayoría de nosotros no perderíamos el tiempo en algo con pocas probabilidades de éxito, pero los caminos de Dios no son nuestros caminos. La generosidad de Dios nos invita a reflexionar sobre las muchas veces que Él ha derramado su gracia sobre nosotros, aun cuando nuestros corazones no estaban preparados para recibirla.
Esto nos lleva a considerar los distintos tipos de terreno donde cae la semilla: el estado de nuestros corazones cuando se nos comparte la Palabra de Dios. Se nos invita a reflexionar sobre cómo hemos sido cada uno de esos tipos de terreno en diferentes momentos de nuestra vida y cómo podemos llegar a ser «tierra fértil». ¡Encontremos consuelo al saber que, cuando nuestros corazones son terreno pedregoso o están entre espinos, Dios es perseverante! Con paciencia y amor, Él siembra su Palabra en nuestro interior, transformándonos en tierra fértil que no solo escucha su Palabra, sino que la comprende y da fruto abundante para el Reino.
