The Feast of Sto. Niño del Mundo will be joyfully commemorated during the 10:00 AM Mass on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. The Mass will be officiated by Rev. Anthony Astrab and is being presented by the church in cooperation with the OLPH Filipino community. This meaningful celebration honors a centuries-old devotion that continues to inspire faith and unity among Filipinos and parishioners worldwide.
The devotion to the Sto. Niño, or the Holy Child Jesus, is one of the most enduring and beloved traditions in Philippine Catholicism. Its origins trace back to 1521, when Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in the Philippines. Following the baptism of Rajah Humabon and his wife, Magellan presented them with a small image of the Child Jesus, a symbol of peace and faith.
That sacred image, now enshrined in Cebu as the Sto. Niño de Cebu, is regarded as the oldest Christian artifact in the Philippines. Over the centuries, it has become a powerful emblem of the nation’s enduring faith and the Filipino people’s steadfast devotion to the Holy Child.
Among the many venerated images of the Holy Child is the Sto. Niño del Mundo, meaning “Holy Child of the World.” This representation depicts the young Jesus as a radiant king, clothed in royal garments, holding a scepter in one hand and a golden orb topped with a cross in the other. The orb symbolizes the world, while the cross represents Christ’s eternal sovereignty and love for humankind.
Beyond its regal imagery, the Sto. Niño del Mundo embodies the compassion, humility, and divine care of Christ for all people. It reminds the faithful that though He reigns over all creation, His heart remains close to the simplest of souls, especially the childlike and the pure in faith.
The Feast of Sto. Niño del Mundo is not only a moment of prayer and thanksgiving but also a celebration of community. Following the Mass, all parishioners and guests are warmly invited to Stokes Hall for coffee and cookies, a time to share fellowship, friendship, and the joyful spirit of the occasion.
Through this annual celebration, the OLPH community continues to uphold a rich cultural and spiritual legacy, reminding everyone that the light of the Holy Child still shines brightly in the hearts of those who believe.
