While our 40-day Lenten journey has ended, our 50-day Easter journey now begins to Pentecost. On your 50-day Easter journey, I would like to give you a gift, and a challenge that was given to me in my Catholic faith journey. If you accept this gift and complete this challenge, I can make you a promise: You will experience God’s presence in your life in both big, powerful ways, and in subtle, gentle and intimate ways, and your life – and the lives of those around you – will be greatly impacted for the better.
The gift and challenge is this: to pray a very simple prayer every day during this 50-day Easter season. Then, after the Easter season, I invite you to continue praying it for the rest of your life. It is a prayer that I pray daily and intend to pray for the rest of my life. It is a rich prayer rooted in the tradition of our Catholic Church.
The prayer is called the “Examen Prayer”, and it has 3 very easy steps / questions in the prayer. The Examen Prayer is a technique of prayerful reflection on the events of our day in order to detect God’s presence and discern his direction for us. The “Examen Prayer” is an ancient practice in our Catholic Church that helps us to see God’s hand at work in our daily lives. It is considered by St. Ignatius of Loyola (the Founder of the Jesuits) to be the one spiritual practice – outside of the Sacraments – that should never be skipped in our daily life.
So, enough of me talking about the “Examen Prayer”, how do you pray the “Examen Prayer”? Below are simple directions:
First, set aside 15 minutes each day (preferably in the evening, sometime before bedtime) to
pray the “Examen Prayer”. (At the start of this prayer you may very likely be tired, distracted, anxious about life, worried about family, the future, or work, or you may simply be unmotivated to pray. This is completely normal and routinely the case in my life and in everyone else’s life that prayers this prayer as well. Know that if you feel this way, you are in communion with many other faithful Catholics. Just be sure to begin the prayer, no matter what state of mind or mood you may be in.
Second, these 15 minutes will be used to reflect on the 3 questions below (Feel free to answer
each question mentally or by journaling.)
It is that simple. Next week, I will share a little more information about this prayer. I invite you to start the “Examen Prayer” today, and to pray it each day this week. Happy Easter, and may you discover the power of the Resurrected Jesus in your life – especially through praying the “Examen Prayer”. God’s blessing in abundance!

Aunque nuestro camino cuaresmal de 40 días ha llegado a su fin, ahora comienza nuestro camino pascual de 50 días hasta Pentecostés. En este camino pascual de 50 días, me gustaría hacerte un regalo y proponerte un desafío que a mí me fue planteado en mi camino de fe católica. Si aceptas este regalo y completas este desafío, te puedo hacer una promesa: experimentarás la presencia de Dios en tu vida tanto de maneras grandes y poderosas como de maneras sutiles, suaves e íntimas, y tu vida —y las vidas de quienes te rodean— se verán muy impactadas para mejor.
El regalo y el desafío son los siguientes: rezar una oración muy sencilla cada día durante este tiempo de Pascua de 50 días. Luego, una vez finalizado el tiempo de Pascua, te invito a que sigas rezándola durante el resto de tu vida. Es una oración que yo rezo a diario y que tengo la intención de rezar durante el resto de mi vida. Es una oración rica, arraigada en la tradición de nuestra Iglesia católica.
Esta oración se conoce como el «Examen», y consta de tres pasos o preguntas muy sencillas. El «Examen» es una técnica de reflexión orante sobre los acontecimientos de nuestro día con el fin de detectar la presencia de Dios y discernir su voluntad para nosotros. El «Examen» es una práctica ancestral de nuestra Iglesia católica que nos ayuda a ver la mano de Dios actuando en nuestra vida cotidiana. San Ignacio de Loyola (el Fundador de los Jesuitas) la considera la única práctica espiritual —aparte de los sacramentos— que nunca debería omitirse en nuestra vida cotidiana.
Bueno, ya basta de hablar de la «Oración del Examen», ¿Cómo se reza la «Oración del Examen»? A continuación, te ofrezco unas sencillas instrucciones:
En primer lugar, reserva 15 minutos cada día (preferiblemente por la noche, un rato antes de
acostarte) para rezar la «Oración del Examen». (Es muy probable que, al comenzar esta oración, te sientas cansado, distraído, ansioso por la vida, preocupado por la familia, el futuro o el trabajo, o que simplemente no te apetezca rezar. Esto es completamente normal y ocurre habitualmente en mi vida y en la de todos los que rezan esta oración. Ten en cuenta que, si te sientes así, estás en comunión con muchos otros católicos fieles. Solo asegúrate de comenzar la oración, sin importar el estado de ánimo o el estado mental en el que te encuentres.
En segundo lugar, estos 15 minutos se dedicarán a reflexionar sobre las tres preguntas siguientes (puedes responder a cada pregunta mentalmente o escribiéndolas en tu diario).
Así de sencillo. La semana que viene compartiré un poco más de información sobre esta oración. Te invito a que empieces hoy mismo con la «Oración del Examen» y a que la reces cada día de esta semana. Feliz Pascua, y que descubras el poder de Jesús Resucitado en tu vida, especialmente a través de la «Oración del Examen». ¡Que Dios te bendiga abundantemente!
