The Catholic Church has been on the forefront of conversations regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI). Our Catholic Church has been talking with scientists on the subject of Artificial Intelligence for more than 10 years. In 2016, the Vatican formally began discussions on AI when it launched the “Minerva Dialogues”. It brought together theologians, philosophers, engineers, and tech executives to discuss the societal and moral impacts of AI.
This past Monday, May 25, Pope Leo XIV released a new encyclical letter entitled, “Magnifica Humanitas”. The encyclical is on “Safeguarding the Human Person in the time of Artificial Intelligence”. As I have begun to read “Magnifica Humanitas”, something that has nourished me is Pope Leo’s beautiful shepherding heart and his loving insights which encourage us to take to take the right path ahead.
“Magnifica Humanitas” is composed of an introduction, five chapters, and a conclusion. Please take some time to read the encyclical with me. If it is possible, I encourage you to read it with your spouse, as a family with your older children (13 years or older), with another parishioner, or with a Catholic or non-Catholic friend. I promise you, it will be fruitful for you to read it and reflect with someone else. Next week, I will give a little reflection on the introduction section of the encyclical, which consists of paragraphs 1-16. La Iglesia católica ha estado a la vanguardia de los debates sobre la inteligencia artificial (IA). Nuestra Iglesia católica lleva más de diez años dialogando con científicos sobre el tema de la inteligencia artificial. En 2016, el Vaticano inició formalmente los diálogos sobre la IA con el lanzamiento de los «Diálogos Minerva». Estos reunieron a teólogos, filósofos, ingenieros y ejecutivos del sector tecnológico para analizar los impactos sociales y morales de la IA.
El pasado lunes 25 de mayo, el Papa León XIV publicó una nueva carta encíclica titulada «Magnifica Humanitas». La encíclica trata sobre «La custodia de la persona humana en el tiempo de la Inteligencia Artificial». Al comenzar a leer «Magnifica Humanitas», algo que me ha enriquecido es el hermoso corazón pastoral del Papa León y sus amorosas reflexiones, que nos animan a tomar el camino correcto hacia el futuro.
«Magnifica Humanitas» se compone de una introducción, cinco capítulos y una conclusión. Por favor, tómate un tiempo para leer la encíclica conmigo. Si es posible, te animo a que la leas con tu cónyuge, en familia con tus hijos mayores (a partir de 13 años), con otro feligrés o con un amigo católico o no católico. Te prometo que te resultará fructífero leerla y reflexionar con otra persona. La próxima semana, compartiré una pequeña reflexión sobre la introducción de la encíclica, que abarca los párrafos 1 a 16.
