Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA)

How does one become Catholic?

Welcome! It’s wonderful that you are exploring faith and how to share in the joy, peace, and hope of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Catholic Church has a process called the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) that calls adults (and children of catechetical age) to a conversion of mind and heart and that prepares them for a whole and active life in the Church as disciples of Jesus.  This process is spread out over a period of time – in many cases a year or more – to help the individual to become a mature and involved Catholic Christian.  The OCIA takes place within the context of a parish community.

What is OCIA (formerly, RCIA)?

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the process established by the universal Church for individuals who wish to become Catholic and receive the sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. This initiation process also involves the parish community, which experiences a renewal in faith as it prepares to welcome new members into the Church.

The Rite emphasizes conversion as a “spiritual journey.” This journey is centered on fostering a deep relationship with Jesus and the Church he founded and takes place through distinct stages over a suitable period. The goal is to provide thorough catechesis, meaningful experiences within the parish community, and commitment to the liturgical and moral life of Catholic believers.

Who is OCIA for?

  1. Persons in need of Baptism.
  2. Persons baptized in another Christian tradition who desire to become Catholic.
  3. Persons baptized Catholic in need of First Communion and/or Confirmation.
