Mental healthcare professionals will tell you that constantly looking back on the past leads to depression and constantly looking toward the future causes anxiety. God’s grace is not in the future. God’s grace is not in the past. “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the pre-sent” (Bill Keane).
What moment do we find ourselves in right now? We are on the cusp of the holy season on Lent. We are standing on the edge of the precipice, looking at the spiritual disciplines that lie before us, getting ready to sink or swim.
Our second reading says: “When this which is corruptible clothes itself with incorruptibility and this which is mortal clothes itself with immortality, then the word that is written shall come about: Death is swallowed up in victory.” What exactly does that mean? We must allow ourselves to be changed, to be transformed. We who were once corruptible, must now flee from sinfulness. We who were once dead in our sins can be brought to everlasting life in Christ’s forgiveness.
And who is the victor over death? It is Christ who swallows it up through His death. Of course God could simply say the word and we would all be saved, but He chose to send His Son and He chose to require our cooperation. “No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher.”
And so it was that God Almighty sent the most unfathomable present to us here and now, our very own Teacher. His grace is with us in this moment, leading, guiding and loving. Let us receive this gift and open our hearts to all the lessons and graces He has in store for us today.
La gracia de Dios en el momento presente

Los profesionales de la salud mental dirán que mirar constantemente al pasado conduce a la depresión y mirar constantemente al futuro causa ansie-dad. La gracia de Dios no está en el futuro. La gracia de Dios no está en el pasado. “El ayer es historia, el mañana es un misterio, el hoy es un don de Dios, por eso lo llamamos presente” (Bill Keane).
¿En qué momento nos encontramos ahora mismo? Estamos en la cúspide de la temporada santa de Cuaresma. Estamos parados al borde del precipi-cio, mirando las disciplinas espirituales que se encuentran ante nosotros, preparándonos para hundirnos o sobrevivir nadando.
La segunda lectura dice: “Cuando nuestro ser corruptible y mortal se revista de incorruptibilidad e inmortalidad, entonces se cumplirá la palabra de la Escritura: La muerte ha sido aniquilada por la victoria”. ¿Qué significa eso exactamente? Debemos permitirnos ser cambiados, ser transformados. Nosotros que una vez éramos corruptibles, ahora debemos huir del pecado. Nosotros que una vez estuvimos muertos en el pecado podemos ser llevados a la vida eterna en el perdón de Cristo.
¿Y quién es el vencedor de la muerte? Es Cristo, quien la devora con su muerte. Por supuesto, Dios podría simplemente decir la palabra y todos seríamos salvos, pero eligió enviar a su Hijo y eligió exigir nuestra coope-ración. “El discípulo no es superior a su maestro; pero cuando termine su aprendizaje, será como su maestro”.
Y así fue como Dios Todopoderoso envió el regalo más insondable al momento presente, nuestro propio Maes-tro. Su gracia está con nosotros en este momento, guiándonos, dirigiéndonos y amándonos. Recibamos este regalo y abramos nuestros corazones a todas las lecciones y gracias que Él tiene para nosotros hoy.
