From today’s gospel reading
Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths”.
Reflection
John the Baptist was that messenger sent by God to call people for repentance. But what should we really understand by “repentance”? Repentance is not just about being regretful about this or that sin we have committed. Repentance involves total change – we must change our ways of thinking and redirect our lives.
John invited his contemporaries to confess their sins and to sharpen their perception of what was about to happen. John assured them that the Messiah was coming to begin something new in them and that repentance cleared the clutter so they could be free to receive him at his coming.
So, we ask ourselves
If John prepared the people for Christ by baptizing them in the Jordan, and if we have already been baptized, what can we do as we prepare for a new “beginning” in Christ?
We can renew our baptismal faith. We can recommit ourselves during these early days of Advent, to being more attentive to God’s Word and to receiving the Eucharist -which graces us and enables us to “prepare the way of the Lord and make straight his paths”.

He aquí, yo envío a mi mensajero delante de ti; Él preparará tu camino. Una voz de alguien que clama en el desierto: “Preparen el camino del Señor, enderecen sus sendas”.
Reflexión
Juan el Bautista fue ese mensajero enviado por Dios para llamar a la gente al arrepentimiento. Pero ¿qué debe-mos entender realmente por “arrepentimiento”? El arrepentimiento no se trata solo de sentirnos mal por este o aquel pecado que hayamos cometido. El arrepentimiento implica un cambio total: debemos cambiar nuestra for-ma de pensar y redirigir nuestras vidas.
Juan invitó a sus contemporáneos a confesar sus pecados y a agudizar su percepción de lo que estaba a punto de suceder. Juan les aseguró que el Mesías vendría a comenzar algo nuevo en ellos y que el arrepentimiento despe-jaría el desorden interior para que pudieran ser libres de recibirlo cuando llegase.
Entonces, nos preguntamos
Si Juan preparó a la gente para Cristo bautizándolos en el Jordán; y si nosotros ya hemos sido bautizados, ¿qué podemos hacer mientras nos preparamos para un nuevo “comienzo” en Cristo?
Podemos renovar nuestra fe bautismal. En estos primeros días de Adviento, nos comprometemos, de nuevo, a estar más atentos a la Palabra de Dios y a recibir la Eucaristía, que nos da la gracia que nos permite “preparar el camino del Señor y enderezar sus caminos”.
