THE US BISHOP’S REFLECTION ON CATHOLIC TEACHING AND POLITICAL LIFE
13. In the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life a moral obligation. “People in every nation enhance the social dimension of their lives by acting as committed and responsible citizens” (Evangelii Gaudium No. 220). The obligation to participate in political life is rooted in our baptismal commitment to follow Jesus Christ and to bear Christian witness in all we do.
As The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, “It is necessary that all participate, each according to his (her) position and role, in promoting the common good. This obligation is inherent in the dignity of the human person … As far as possible citizens should take an active part is public life” (Nos. 1913-1915).

“We need to participate for the common good. Sometimes we hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics. This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of themselves so that the leader can govern”.

13. En la tradición católica, la ciudadanía responsable es una virtud, y la participación en la vida política una obligación moral. “Las personas en todas las naciones realzan la dimensión social de sus vidas actuando como ciudadanos comprometidos y responsables” (Evangelii Gaudium No. 220). La obligación de participar en la vida política tiene sus raíces en nuestro compromiso bautismal de seguir a Jesucristo y dar testimonio cristiano en todo lo que hacemos.
Como nos recuerda el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, “Es necesario que todos participen, cada uno según su posición y papel, en la promoción del bien común. Esta obligación es inherente a la dignidad de la persona humana… En la medida de lo posible, los ciudadanos deben tomar parte activa en la vida pública” (Nos. 1913-1915).

“Necesitamos participar por el bien común. A veces escuchamos: un buen católico no está interesado en la política. Esto no es cierto: los buenos católicos se sumergen en la política ofreciendo lo mejor de sí mismos para que el líder pueda gobernar”.
