My dear parishioners,
Leaving the parish of Our Heavenly Father, in Brownsville, Texas, where I had been the pastor for twelve years, my Marist superior assigned me to Tampa, to relieve Fr. Roland Lajoi. With me there were other three senior Marists priests in residence: Ray Coolong, Ken Ridgeway, and Paul F. Morrissey.
On February 26, 20017 I was installed as the new pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, by Bishop Gregory Parkes. Taking over the parish I realized it was quite a significant challenge. My predecessor did a marvelous job renovating the interior of the church. It all came out beautifully. This renovation was done even during financial struggles; nothing new, scarcity of monetary resources has always been a problem, even to this day. Repairs and renovation projects have also been pulling me to my limits!
OLPH is, as you know, a multicultural community: White American (with a large Italian component), Filipino, and Hispanic (a mixture of Puerto Rican, Cuban, Mexican, Centro American and Caribbean). Being our parish community so culturally diverse, pastoral care has represented a big challenge to me.
I lived with you for the past seven years an extraordinary adventure. We survived the Coronavirus Pandemic, and multiple poor economic situations. But you have responded so well to all my initiatives! Committed parishioners have been very active in so many commissions: Parish Pastoral Council, Finance Council, Liturgical ministries, Devotional groups, Choirs, and Religious Education programs. I remain so thankful to all of them. Literally, without them, how could I have accomplished my job?
If this is not too much asking, can I count on your enthusiastic support until the end of my tenure -at the end of June 2024? In July I will be transferred to a parish in Mexico City. And can I count on you to help the upcoming pastor? I will miss you so much! But you will remain in my heart and in my prayers. And as always, I will be asking Our Lady of Perpetual Help for her intercession on your behalf before the Lord.

Mis queridos feligreses,
Al dejar la parroquia de Nuestro Padre Celestial, en Brownsville, Texas, donde había sido párroco durante doce años, mi supe-rior marista me asignó a Tampa, para relevar al P. Rolland Lajoi. Conmigo había otros tres sacerdotes maristas retirados: Ray Coolong, Ken Ridgeway y Paul F. Morrissey.
El 26 de febrero de 20017 fui instalado como nuevo párroco de la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro, por el Obispo Gregory Parkes. Al hacerme cargo de la parroquia me di cuenta de que era un gran desafío. Mi predecesor hizo un trabajo mara-villoso renovando el interior de la iglesia. Todo quedó precioso. Esta renovación se hizo durante serias dificultades financieras. Nada nuevo, la escasez de recursos monetarios siempre ha sido un problema, incluso hasta el día de hoy. ¡Las reparaciones y los proyectos de renovación también me han llevado al límite!
OLPH es, como saben, una comunidad multicultural: blanca americana (con un gran componente italiano), filipina e hispana (una mezcla de puertorriqueños, cubanos, mexicanos, centroamericanos y caribeños). Siendo nuestra comunidad parroquial tan diversa culturalmente, el cuidado pastoral ha representado para mi todo un reto.
He vivido con ustedes, durante los últimos siete años, una aventura extraordinaria. Sobrevivimos a la pandemia del coronavirus y a múltiples situaciones económicas deficitarias. ¡Pero me admira la manera como han respondido a todas mis iniciativas! Ha habido feligreses comprometidos y muy activos en comisiones diversas: Consejo Pastoral Parroquial, Consejo de Finanzas, Ministerios Litúrgicos, Grupos Devocionales, Coros y programas de Educación Religiosa. ¡Estoy tan agradecido con todos ellos! Literalmente, sin ellos, ¿cómo podría yo haber llevado a cabo mi trabajo?
Si no es mucho pedir, ¿puedo contar con su apoyo entusiasta hasta el final de mi mandato, a finales de junio de 2024? En julio seré trasladado a una parroquia en la Ciudad de México. ¿Y puedo contar con ustedes también para que ayuden al próximo pá-rroco? ¡Los echaré mucho de menos! Pero permanecerán en mi corazón y en mis oraciones. Como siempre, seguiré pidiendo a Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro su intercesión por ustedes ante el Señor.
