Today’s gospel reading records some of Jesus’ last words to His closest followers before the crucifixion. His primary message is the same one we heard in the second reading: “love one another.” We have already seen that love is more than a feeling. It is self-giving and active. When Jesus calls us to love one another in the Church, He is giving us a high calling that is not easy. How can we do this? Well, we can’t on our own. It is only the love of God working in us that makes it possible for us to truly love. Jesus said, “Remain in my love.” This is the key. We must be full of Jesus’ love to have any love to give to others. How do we remain in His love? By keeping His commandments. We manifest God’s love best when we are in right relationship with God. Sin (i.e. breaking the commandments) separates us from God and can prevent, by our own choice, the love of God from effectively working in and through us. But when we obey God’s commandments and align our wills with His will, then we can truly love one another. When we let God’s love fill us and spill out into others, then it is amazing what God can do through us. The reality is that it is hard to love as God calls us to, but with God all things are possible. Jesus died out of perfect love for us and because of His death we can have life in Him that brings life to others. Let us, there-fore, receive the love of God and then selflessly share that love with others.

Thank God today for His love for you, especially His perfect expression of love on the cross.
Regularly offer this simple prayer: “God, help me to know your love and share it with others.”
Reflect on how well you love people in your life in a self-giving, active way. Who do you need to love better? Ask God to help you love them as He loves them.

La lectura del evangelio de hoy registra algunas de las últimas palabras de Jesús a sus seguidores más cercanos antes de la crucifixión. Su mensaje principal es el mismo que escuchamos en la segunda lectura: amaos unos a otros ”. Ya hemos visto que el amor es más que un sentimiento. Es abnegado y activo. Cuando Jesús nos llama a amarnos unos a otros en la Iglesia, nos está dando un llamado elevado que no es fácil. ¿Cómo podemos hacer esto? Bueno, no podemos por nuestra cuenta. Sólo el amor de Dios obrando en nosotros es lo que nos permite amar verdaderamente. Jesús dijo: “Permaneced en mi amor”. Ésta es la clave. Debemos estar llenos del amor de Jesús para tener amor para dar a los demás. ¿Cómo permanecemos en su amor? Guardando sus mandamientos. Manifestamos mejor el amor de Dios cuando tenemos una relación correcta con Dios. El pecado (es decir, romper los mandamientos) nos separa de Dios y puede impedir, por nuestra propia elección, que el amor de Dios obre efectivamente en nosotros y a través de nosotros. Pero cuando obedecemos los mandamientos de Dios y alineamos nuestra voluntad con Su voluntad, entonces podemos amarnos verdaderamente unos a otros. Cuando dejamos que el amor de Dios nos llene y se derrame sobre los demás, es sorprendente lo que Dios puede hacer a través de nosotros. La realidad es que es difícil amar como Dios nos llama a hacerlo, pero con Dios todo es posible. Jesús murió por perfecto amor por nosotros y gracias a Su muerte podemos tener vida en Él que trae vida a los demás. Por lo tanto, recibamos el amor de Dios y luego compartamos ese amor desinteresadamente con los demás.
